El lagópodo es en su mayor parte blanco en invierno, y una combinación de marrón rojizo, gris, blanco y negro en verano. Los encontramos en las zonas alpinas abiertas, donde se camuflan tan bien con las rocas, que a menudo no se ven hasta que alzan el vuelo.
