Blackwater Pond is a popular resting spot for visitors to the park headquarters in Bartlett Cove. This small pond is home to many species of insects—most visibly damsel flies and dragonflies. Many songbird species nest in the area creating a symphonic soundscape in the spring when they are all singing. Birds like mallards, Barrow’s goldeneyes, and great blue herons are also known to nest in the area. This spot is handicap accessible and only about ¼ mile off the paved road, but it often feels much farther away. Photographer: Sean Neilson
