The red squirrel is a common critter throughout Alaska and Glacier Bay. While there is ample forest habitat for red squirrels, they do not yet occupy all of it yet. This is because some of this habitat is on islands that have only recently developed into forests. As time goes on, squirrels will continue to spread until they occupy most of this habitat – except, perhaps, some islands that are too far away from land to swim to! Walking around in squirrel country is often punctuated by their large middens of seeds and cones and a ubiquitous chatter that can be startling if you are not ready for it. Photographer: Sean Neilson
