We'd hauled our pack rafts across the glacier hoping to paddle in the glacier dammed lake on the other side. As we'd passed this pond we joked that it might be the only water we'd actually get to... which turned out to be right. The glacier at the big lake was way too steep to descend. So on the return hike we just couldn't pass the pond by. The rock you see is a relatively thin layer on top of dozens, if not hundreds, of feet of ice. The shoreline around the pond was a slick layer of clear ice. My other hiking companion, not visible in this photo, is changing out of cold, wet clothing after not quite managing to make the transition from the edge of the pond into the raft...
