Los altramuces azules y púrpuras sobresalen con sus pinceladas coloridas, pero al caminar por la montaña, las plantas que cubren el suelo suelen ser las menos vistosas. Las relucientes hojas con forma de riñón de las Nephrophyllidium, son verdes en verano y amarillas en otoño. Las argañas de Alaska y las Luetkea pectinata , presentes en esta fotografía abajo a la derecha, también son plantas habituales de los valles alpinos de Glacier Bay.

The blue lupine and purple mountain paintbrush stand out, but when walking in the alpine, it is generally the less showy plants that cover the ground. The shiny kidney-shaped leaves of 'deer-cabbage' are brilliant green in summer and yellow in fall.
