In the spring, Blue Grouse hens can be seen all over the lower parts of Glacier Bay with a string of up to eight or more chicks. You may see the same family over the course of a week or two, with fewer and fewer chicks each day. The grouse are playing a numbers game in which they try to get at least one chick to adulthood. Birds and other terrestrial predators take quite a toll on the clutch. This chick navigates a virtual forest of Robbins' milkvetch. Photographer: Sean Neilson
