All of the climbing in backcountry Glacier Bay is trail-less, which often means thrashing through alder shrubs, then low thorny salmonberry shrubs and finally out into the open. On this day, it was such a relief to get onto the snow. Lower down we'd been covered with mosquitoes and sweating hard. I was jubilant to be here on a sunny day looking down at Geikie Inlet with the sediments of the Geikie River settling into their new ocean home.
