Sea otters are one of my favorite inhabitants of Glacier Bay National Park. Cute and fuzzy with a Napoleonic attitude, otters may be biologically boiled down to fangs and stomach. Their teeth are sturdy and impressive. They are, after all, the largest member of the weasel family, and have the dentition to show for it! Sea otters consume just about anything they can catch – from crabs and clams to urchins and in this case a basket star. Basket stars do not make up a huge percentage of an otter's daily diet, but may provide some variety and ease of acquisition. Basket stars are distantly related to sea stars and feed on passing plankton. This one was torn apart with apparent relish as the otter rested on its back in the water, chewing each bite ostentatiously with its mouth open, as if daring us to tell it to be more polite.
