Every August, there are places in Glacier Bay that are aflame with the bright pink color of giant fireweed. The plants grow several feet high, stretching up to better disperse their seeds, which are carried great distances on the wind. Giant fireweed is typical of uplift meadows, subalpine meadows, and meadows on limestone (shown here). As the glaciers retreat, plants like giant fireweed move in as part of the ‘plant succession’ process. Photographer: Sean Neilson
