The Steller sea lions at South Marble Island are a growing attraction for visitors to Glacier Bay. However, sea lions only began hauling out here around 1985. During the past few decades their numbers have grown for a variety of reasons. For much of this time, South Marble Island was deemed a “bachelor colony” and not a breeding colony, but recently nursing has been observed and at least one newborn pup has been documented. In this scene, a large bull oversees the colony with Mt. Fairweather dominating the horizon. Photographer: Sean Neilson
