This photo is about the downtown Juneau Public Library, the top floor of the building on the left. There's an urban legend about the library that goes something like this: The building was originally proposed as a parking garage, which at the time downtown Juneau really needed. But there was some controversy about valuable water front property being used for parking cars. A new library had been planned for another location but because of the controversy, the parking garage plan was changed placing the library on the top floor and questions about a waterfront parking garage were quelled. Regardless of the accuracy of the legend, the reading room in the Juneau downtown library has a unique view, about 8 months a year the Gastineau Channel and Douglas Island change with the seasons, and about 4 months a year the cruise ship view changes almost daily.
